In 2009, the U.S. Mint began producing a new $20 gold piece designed using the original 1907 design of Augustus St. Gaudens. The Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin is made from 24 carat gold and weighs one ounce.
The original 1907 double eagle is considered by many to be the most beautiful coin ever produced, but the minting process then didn't allow the coin to be easily produced in the intended ultra high relief. While the coin is an almost exact replica , there have been a few changes made to the design. The year in Roman numerals (MMIX) has been updated, four more stars were added to represent the last four states to enter the Union and the motto "In God We Trust" has been added to the reverse under the eagle.
There hasn't been a limit on the number to be struck, but initially the Mint is allowing only one coin per family until they can see the demand.
