Gold coins have long been a favorite collectors item, for their beauty, rarity and intrinsic worth. Governments have been issuing gold coins starting around 560 BC and continuing until the 1930's when most countries stopped minting gold coins. Once the U.S. government allowed citizens to hold gold again during the 1970's, many countries have entered the gold coin market including South Africa (Krugerrand), Canada (Maple Leaf), China(Panda), Australia (Nugget and Prospector) and many more and the gold coin has once again become a favorite investment vehicle for millions.
Gold bullion coins have also been popular with investors as a hedge against inflation. Bullion coins usually are minted in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 and 1/20 oz. sizes. The smaller sizes usually have a higher premium, but they are popular with those who would like to invest, but might not have the $800+ it takes to buy a 1oz Krugerrand.
